The
Swedish Modern Set comprises three separate display faces equally inspired by modern
Swedish calligraphy of the 1950s and 1960s.
Stockholm is a roman. It is distinguished by tall
ascenders, squarish counters and tightly-bracketed serifs. The tall ascenders accentuate
its elegant bearing while the open counters maintain easy legibility. The entry/exit
stroke movement of the serifs adds dynamism. Together, Stockholm is a triumph of
calligraphic tension married to functionalist minimalism. Its precision and grace make it
suitable for advertising and collateral seeking a modern, yet timeless look. Stockholm
comes with alternate characters for Q and R as well as a special gj ligature that aids
Swedish setting.
Goteborg is a sharp, cool italic with understated
swash capitals. The subtle swelling of the entry and exit strokes, coupled with its gentle
slope, emphasize its lightness. Goteborg is like a ballet dancer en point. Delicate and
sophisticated, it is a perfect typeface for invitations, cosmetic and jewelry advertising
and any designs requiring a refined yet contemporary feel. Goteborg has alternate
characters for q and t as well as a special gj ligature for setting Swedish.
Uppsala is a modern reinterpretation of an
uncial. Although it shares the same calligraphically-inflected serifs as Stockholm, its
twisted strokes and increased curves give it a warmer persona. Uppsala deftly avoids the
pitfalls of archaicism with its blend of romanticism and modernism. It can be safely used
in a wide range of settings to suggest both the past and the present. Uppsala has no
lowercase, but it is supplemented with small capitals.
The typefaces of the Swedish Modern Set are
linked by their common calligraphic ancestry. But beyond that, they share a vision of
simplicity, sharpness of form and cleanliness of line common to modern Swedish design.
They are the typographic equivalent of the architecture of Gunnar Asplund, the furniture
of Ikea, the flatware of Karl-Erik Magnusson, the glassware of Orrefors and Kosta Boda,
the pottery of Stig Lindberg, the textiles of Astrid Sampe, or the classic styling of a
Volvo. The typefaces in the Swedish Modern Set are a fusion of calligraphy stripped of its
anachronisms with the spirit of modernism. The result is a trio of distinctive designs
balance modern tension and classic repose in perfect harmony.
